Percentage of Points

Of the issues non-hockey fans have with the NHL, one of the most prevalent is a fear of the NHL's point system. I find myself explaining it at least half a dozen times a season, each explanation taking at least 10 minutes.

"Yes, sometimes you get points for losing"
"Team points are different from individual points. I don't know why they use the same term."
"Yes, it sucks when your rivals go to overtime"
"No, I don't know why they don't just use a percentage system"

That last one really irks me. If you follow baseball or basketball at all, you're familiar with a percentage system. Thus, I present to you the Chum Bucket Percentage of Points system. As you know, the maximum points you can get per game is 2. So, you divide points by games played x 2 to find how many of the maximum number of points your team has earned.

Western Conference
Rank Team GP PTS % of PTS
1 Minnesota 8 15 93.8%
2 Detroit 9 13 72.2%
3 St. Louis 6 8 66.7%
4 Chicago 8 10 62.5%
5 Dallas 8 10 62.5%
6 San Jose 9 11 61.1%
7 Calgary 9 10 55.6%
8 Columbus 7 7 50.0%
9 Colorado 8 8 50.0%
10 Anaheim 10 9 45.0%
11 Vancouver 9 8 44.4%
12 Edmonton 8 6 37.5%
13 Los Angeles 9 6 33.3%
14 Nashville 7 4 28.6%
15 Phoenix 7 4 28.6%

So, our beloved Sharks are doing OK, 6th in the Western Conference and practically tied for Dallas for 1st in the Pacific.

Blah Blah Blah, here's Alexei Semenov dumping Eric Godard into the Sharks bench:
