The San Jose Sharks played their hearts and their guts out on Sunday night, silencing the detractors who constantly questioned their heart...
But still lost.
The defense gave their best 60 minutes of hockey in the first 3 overtimes. The squad blocked shots, stood up at the line to stop Dallas from entering the zone, and most importantly, cleared the zone with control and poise...
But still couldn't stop the Stars power play.
Patrick Marleau answered many critics with his play after the All-Star Break and throughout the first round of the postseason. His two shorthanded goals vs. Dallas were spectacular at critical times in the games...
But he was still -2 for the series and didn't contribute much at even strength.
Ron Wilson prepared his team for the nearly-insurmountable task of an 0-3 series deficit. San Jose played like the impossible was more than possible, even likely...
But the team somehow got into that 0-3 deficit in the first place - through long stretches of mental lapses and a complete inability to compete on special teams.
The San Jose Sharks captured their 3rd division title, posted a team record for points, and finished 2nd overall in the NHL regular season...
But fell far short of expectations, prematurely exiting the playoffs in the second round. Again.
----------------------------------------------------
How do you feel right now about the San Jose Sharks? Optimistic? Pessimistic? Disappointed? Proud?
How about conflicted? One minute, I couldn't be more proud of how every single Shark played in Game 6, especially in overtime. The next minute, I'm incensed they managed to fall to 0-3 vs. Dallas and bow out of the playoffs early again.
It's really very fitting for these San Jose Sharks. Glimpses of brilliance between eternities of mediocrity.
So where do we go from here?

i still think drinking was in order after the game if nothing else to get a chance to catch breaths. so i dunno. you guys obviously have more insight having watched more games and what not. but a couple things.
1. campbell might have been a spark and everything for the stretch drive, but i still believe that ron wilson is getting shafted beyond belief. i dont think the players quit on him and thats evidenced by sharks picking it up in the most important part of the season, the stretch drive. and in the playoffs, i dunno how you fault rw on anything. especially that dallas series, youre talking about one faceoff, one penalty, and one hand and thats 3 games right there that could have gone either way. you say youre frustrated by going 0-3 to dallas but how can you really pin that on any one person in particular?
2. not so much you but if one more person bitches about marleau im gonna throw up in my mouth. ah! there you. youre talking about top 10 centerman in the entire league who not only sets it up but puts up goals, wins faceoffs, provides depth down the center, and for gods sakes BACKCHECKS!
3. i get it. quad ot you gotta go with whoevers got the legs and what not and maybe that means ehroff. but seriously. carle and vlasic as young as they might be are 13,000 times better than ehroff. might have had a decent regular season but he had so many god awful horrible playoff games. pick any of the following; pinching at the worst possible moments, turning it over consistently, feeling the pressure and coughing it up, running into guys. my god
4. i had no idea sharks were so under the cap. SPEND SOME OF THAT CAP ROOM GUYS! signing campbell long term might be ok as long as not too long, but since change is inevitable this off season id like to see sharks package somethign along the lines of vlasic ehroff and clowe or mitchell or something for i have no idea. ha! real constructive huh. the point is the core whether or not sharks fans want to admit or not is still viable elite status. blowing it up by sending marleau which i dont think is possible anymore is inane. and did you know nabby is 33? i coulda sworn that guy was <30
alright then. pens v detroit? im thinkin pens "shock" detroit and sweep even though it wouldnt really shock me that much.
1. I'll agree that it's tough and somewhat unfair to pin the difficulties on one person in particular, but the first person to look at is going to be the coach. I'm basing my "Fire Wilson" campaign on 2 points - 1. Do you think this team has progressed - at all - from 2 years ago and the loss to Edmonton? I say no, not one bit. 2. A one-armed blind chimp could've lead a team this talented to the second round 3 years in a row. At some point, they have to be lead to the next echelon.
2. I'm not really hating on Marleau these days, honestly. I do think he's getting a bad rap in the Dallas series. If not for Turco's ridiculous leg-windmill save, Patty would be the Game 6 hero. But if there's going to be an overhaul (especially attitude-wise), Marleau is going to be a target to be shipped.
3. I don't know what the hell happened to Ehrhoff. Just when he was showing some of his ability, he misses a few games then comes back and stinks up the joint. I think his allergy towards controlling the puck must have flared up again. CONTROL THE PUCK AND SKATE IT OUT OF THE ZONE! STOP WHACKING AT IT!!!
4. San Jose is, and will always be, way under the cap. I'd like to write a post debating whether management is holding up their end of the bargain. On the trade front, I'm sadly attached to most of our forwards but the D can be broken up and sent to the wind. Vlasic, Carle, Ehrhoff, McLaren - all on the block, as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah, go Pens. Whoo.
